Since its formation, Rockjumper Birding Tours has been supporting the conservation of the birds that bring us many delightful hours of sheer bird watching pleasure.
Learn MoreBrad did a great job of handling all the logistics. Both Brad and Dusan were extremely knowlegeable regarding ID by sound, and worked well together. They made extra efforts to get special birds - for example Brad's many years' experience in the Amazon paid off when we got the difficult, localized and rarely seen Chestnut-headed Nunlet in Jau N.P.
Erik and Liew were a wonderful pair of leaders. They were relentless when it came to finding difficult birds and were usually able to find them. Both were very personable and friendly. Transportation was good and they paid attention to detail to insure our comfort and safety. Some accommodations were quite basic but we were in places where there were few options. Food was usually good and a nice mixture of local and Western cuisine. One medical incident occurred and was handled well by Liew and Erik. Would definitely recommend Rockjumper.
Lev was absolutely fantastic. It was quite a hard tour (but easier than I expected, and we've done harder in South America and Indonesia, for example), but he just kept going and kept positive. His organizational skills were very much needed: two cancelled flights, so two nights in top quality hotels provided by Air Niugini, but two days lost birding. And the entire group lost their luggage; as our aircraft took off from Kiunga, we saw the luggage trolly still on the tarmac, piled high with our bags. His help in sorting that out was invaluable. As I write this 10 days after return to the UK, our luggage has just arrived at Heathrow! We go to collect it tomorrow. Of course, his birding skills were fantastic, he had a really good relationship with the various Lodge staff we met and he really got on with the local guides treating them as equals and valuing their input. You could see these guys opening up to him as time went on (this was much better than some - sadly British - Tour Leaders we have known, who seem to think that shouting is the answer to any issue!). Amanda Guercio did a marvellous job as Lev's No.2. She was far more capable than she showed. She was obviously doing a lot behind the scenes, but when circumstances allowed (for example, when we were in two boats and she was in charge of one) she was able to show her skills. When Lev was busy dealing with one or another catastrophe, she took charge of the group and sorted out hotels or buying replacement items in the supermarket. Add in culture, landscapes, a couple of earthquakes, the "camp" experience on the Elevah River, really good lodges (much better than I expected) and fantastic birds and you get a top-quality trip. Very different from everywhere else we have been and well worth it.
Glen was an exceptional guide-patient and professional. He managed to find so many birds and I appreciated his skills in showing them to us. I felt very happy to be with him as our guide. The local guides Veronica and Ibrahim were also very good- able to pass on lots of local knowledge about Uganda and the birds.
Julian's good humor and patience are exceeded only by his encyclopedic knowledge of the habits, habitats, and identification of birds and wildlife. He is 10 stars out of 5! I cannot recommend him highly enough. Our driver, Roger, also was very knowledgeable and helpful. His presence was definitely a "plus" for the tour.
This tour met all of my (very high) expectations. But that was because of the excellence of Andre, the absolutely awesome local guide Leons, as well as the exceptional drivers. Having drivers I feel safe with is key to me for me to be able to enjoy a trip - especially with so much driving time and such road conditions as Tanzania presents. I appreciated the little things like Andre providing complimentary snacks from time to time. The local ground agent company that Rockjumper use is clearly up there with the best. I saw almost all of the birds that I wanted to see - and I can’t ask for more. That would not have happened without Andre and Leons exceptional ears and eyes. I also really appreciate when a guide works in harmony with a local guide - which is what was the case here. This tour has reopened my eyes to Rockjumper - following a disappointing previous tour. I love how Rockjumper provide a clear traffic lights indicator of tour conditions, but I just wish people would read this and know their own limitations. Thank you to Andre, Leons, Njanu, Emanuel and the office team.
