Learn MoreI just completed the Ecuador - Northern II: Choco Cloud Forest; Eastern Andes (Paramo and Cloud Forest); and the Ultimate Amazon: Sumaco Foothills & Rio Napo for a total of 21 days. Adam Walleyn was our head guide and he did a fantasic job. He cleary knew all the birds in the region by both sight and sound and worked extremely hard to get everyone on the tours to see every bird. He was very clear in describing what the agenda was for the day, and what we we'd be doing relative to hiking, terrain, hiking difficulties, etc. He was very well organized and very friendly, a perfect guide. Adam also filled out ebird trip reports for every spot we visited over the 21 days and sent them to all tour members every night, so we could easily keep track of the species seen and immediately accept the reports into our individual ebird accounts. Not including birds only heard and not seen, I had 570 species for the trip. I'd also like to praise Rockjumper's local guide on this entire trip, Marcello. He was very friendly, energetic and man did he know the birds of Ecuador and how to find them. His hearing was absolutely acute and very tuned into the birds. Both guides carried scopes and instantly got birds into scope view for everyone. Very happy with the guides and the overall trip.
This tour turned out to be just what I was looking for in a "relaxed" tour: lots of interesting and challenging birds in a variety of habitats, great companions, a well-designed itinerary, and a pace that allowed for enough sleep :-). Wagner was an excellent guide; his knowledge of the birds of the area was encyclopedic, and his ability to hear, spot, and bring them in where we could get decent looks was really remarkable. He was also very flexible, attentive to our various needs, helpful, and great fun to be with. The group was three older women; I am walking with a cane, relying on carrying along a camp stool anytime we are standing around waiting for a bird to respond, and have trouble walking downhill. He quickly started avoiding those downward inclines. He also quickly realized that yes, we did indeed want to see those somewhat harder forest birds, it is just that these days we all just kind of hit a wall and stop having fun after about 8 hours of birding in a day. Wagner did a great job of arranging our days, generally with forest birding in the morning, and marsh or such later in the afternoon, and either a substantial mid-day break or an early finish. Food was varied and delicious. That's all I can think of; I was delighted with the tour, and I am pleased to see that Rockjumper is expanding its "relaxed" options. Thank you for being willing to offer this tour with just 3 of us!
Both guides were excellent and complemented each other very well.
I have been with a lot of leaders from many companies and Lev is right up there with the best. I would be glad to go anywhere with him. He is good at identifying the birds and getting us onto the difficult ones. He works well with the local leader and the van drivers. He is good at letting us know what to expect for each day. His time management, moving us on to the next step is great. He does one of the best evening reports of leaders I have been with. He speaks loudly enough, moves through the report at a good pace, doesn't try to add numbers of birds seen. When I had to step away during the report he left me his report so I could catch up which was very thoughtful. He did send us ebird reports during the day as well. As to the Relaxed Tour Format. It was perfect- The relaxed part comes from being able to stay at most hotels several nights. 6 am breakfast is relaxed-We would have seen more birds with earlier starts but that wasn't the point. As it was, I was able to see about 50 life birds which is very good considering I have been birding in that part of Asia quite a bit. Getting back to accommodations with usually a couple of hours before dinner is relaxed. Having only one meal on the trail and all others at the hotel or in a restaurant is relaxed. The vans were seriously relaxed with even wifi on board. The morning hot drink and snacks breaks is relaxed. I hope you can view the photo at the bottom. Some of the other participants had not been on many bird tours and didn't fully understand how relaxed this was in comparison to most tours. Uthai was a delight. He is a bit of a foodie and very carefully chose the dishes for our meals and explained them and wanted to see how we were doing with them. He introduced us to new fruits and foods and eating experiences. I was so honored to be on a tour with such a well known Thai Bird Leader
We thoroughly enjoyed out time in Guyana. This is our fourth trip with Adam Walleyn and as in the past he was an excellent leader. His upbeat personality is an asset, as well as his rapport with the participants and the local guides. He and our local guide with the help from the guides at each lodge found and got us on all the specialty birds, some of which were easy to see and others of which were a challenge. Thank you again for another memorable experience.
Brad was great. Incredibly knowledgeable about not just the birds but the broader fauna and flora. Worked hard to get us on difficult birds and was also great on making sure everything was organized in terms of trip logistics. Despite him and Dusan having very different styles, I appreciated that they worked well together and played off each others strengths to maximize our success. Would definitely take another trip with either of them, or even better, the two of them together.
