Learn MoreMost of my earlier travelling has been of an entirely independent nature. Indeed, my previous experience of 'organised' travel has been restircted to a single occasion, one that left much to be desired. Happily, 'Atlas to Sahara' reset the balance, and provided a tour and an experience that enabled a most favourable revision of my consideration. I enjoyed 'Atlas to Sahara' enormously, enabled in no small measure to the quality of the leadership. Both David and Rob gave of their enormous knowledge and experience in a manner that enjoyed a splendid combination of scholarship and humour, thus providing information and entertainment in equal measure. They were professional in the extreme, easy-going in their manner, and simply excellent company. I believe that the physical accompaniment of advancing years will dictate that my future ornithological aspirations and adventures will depend increasingly upon the good offices of professional operators. 'Atlas to Sahara' has enabled a further step in that direction.
Lodging was excellent. Loved seeing Victoria Falls and the river dinner cruise. Birding and animal sightings were awesome. Other than the hours this portion of the trip was easier than the Cape and Kruger segments. Can’t say enough good about Wade’s ability as a birding guide. Amazing young man.
I have been with a lot of leaders from many companies and Lev is right up there with the best. I would be glad to go anywhere with him. He is good at identifying the birds and getting us onto the difficult ones. He works well with the local leader and the van drivers. He is good at letting us know what to expect for each day. His time management, moving us on to the next step is great. He does one of the best evening reports of leaders I have been with. He speaks loudly enough, moves through the report at a good pace, doesn't try to add numbers of birds seen. When I had to step away during the report he left me his report so I could catch up which was very thoughtful. He did send us ebird reports during the day as well. As to the Relaxed Tour Format. It was perfect- The relaxed part comes from being able to stay at most hotels several nights. 6 am breakfast is relaxed-We would have seen more birds with earlier starts but that wasn't the point. As it was, I was able to see about 50 life birds which is very good considering I have been birding in that part of Asia quite a bit. Getting back to accommodations with usually a couple of hours before dinner is relaxed. Having only one meal on the trail and all others at the hotel or in a restaurant is relaxed. The vans were seriously relaxed with even wifi on board. The morning hot drink and snacks breaks is relaxed. I hope you can view the photo at the bottom. Some of the other participants had not been on many bird tours and didn't fully understand how relaxed this was in comparison to most tours. Uthai was a delight. He is a bit of a foodie and very carefully chose the dishes for our meals and explained them and wanted to see how we were doing with them. He introduced us to new fruits and foods and eating experiences. I was so honored to be on a tour with such a well known Thai Bird Leader
The trip was an excellent trip with an excellent guide. He kept everybody going with his enthusiasm and knowledge. Accommodations were wonderful.
This was my 2nd (Relaxed ) tour. As far as I can tell relaxed means staying more than 1 night in most places. It means not too strenuous hikes. Not sure it means shorter days. On this tour the ones that brought us back straight to dinner were mostly by our own choice. The relaxed tours are a great option. Paul is an excellent guide and lovely person. He is a good driver, which is important. He was good at adjusting the order of birding places for the day when necessary. He did a great job accommodating for the medical needs that came up. He maintained his patience and cheerfulness throughout. He had good relationships with the hosts of the various places we stayed. I would certainly go anywhere with him and recommend him to everyone.
Stephan is very organized and shows great respect for each client’s needs and wanted birds. Stephan tries very hard to get all clients on each and every bird and asks to ensure that all views are satisfactory. Stephan has a lot of energy, which is contagious and great to see.
