Learn MoreLev was absolutely fantastic. It was quite a hard tour (but easier than I expected, and we've done harder in South America and Indonesia, for example), but he just kept going and kept positive. His organizational skills were very much needed: two cancelled flights, so two nights in top quality hotels provided by Air Niugini, but two days lost birding. And the entire group lost their luggage; as our aircraft took off from Kiunga, we saw the luggage trolly still on the tarmac, piled high with our bags. His help in sorting that out was invaluable. As I write this 10 days after return to the UK, our luggage has just arrived at Heathrow! We go to collect it tomorrow. Of course, his birding skills were fantastic, he had a really good relationship with the various Lodge staff we met and he really got on with the local guides treating them as equals and valuing their input. You could see these guys opening up to him as time went on (this was much better than some - sadly British - Tour Leaders we have known, who seem to think that shouting is the answer to any issue!). Amanda Guercio did a marvellous job as Lev's No.2. She was far more capable than she showed. She was obviously doing a lot behind the scenes, but when circumstances allowed (for example, when we were in two boats and she was in charge of one) she was able to show her skills. When Lev was busy dealing with one or another catastrophe, she took charge of the group and sorted out hotels or buying replacement items in the supermarket. Add in culture, landscapes, a couple of earthquakes, the "camp" experience on the Elevah River, really good lodges (much better than I expected) and fantastic birds and you get a top-quality trip. Very different from everywhere else we have been and well worth it.
Paul was amazing---so energetic, enthusiastic and knowledgeable! Sweet and fun.
The tour leader Mandy Talpas was excellent! She was very organized, the hotels were comfortable, her knowledge of the Hawaiian islands was comprehensive, her ability to find the birds by vocalizations was expert, and her personality and sense of humor contributed to the enjoyment of the trip. The trip could have been one day longer to cover Oahu in a more relaxed style.
The guides continued their superb and tireless efforts to find bird species during the extension to the main tour.
Paul was an amazing guide! Always very energetic and enthusiastic! On top of being an awesome birder, he's a genuinely nice man. Very caring and does his best to make sure everyone sees the bird. We would highly recommend Paul as a guide. Thank you Paul for an awesome trip!!
Ghana was pretty tough birding. The guides - local guides, Paul and Melvin, and Paul Varney were fantastic. The accommodations in some locations could have been a little better, but were as expected for this type of tour.
