He is especially good at locating and then getting all of the guests onto the birds and mammals. Julian is equally skilled when it comes to individual and group dynamics. He quickly learned each guest's particular interests and wish list and did everything he could to realize them while remaining fair and equal to all of the guests. His upbeat and friendly personality is matched in equal measure by his concern and patience; both for each guest individually and for the group as a whole. Our driver, Rogers, was an excellent addition to the tour, both as a skilled driver and for his local knowledge of birds, mammals and nature. The pace of the tour was very good. The lodges were well chosen and comfortable; and offered a welcome variety in settings and accommodations. The food was consistently excellent. We had enough laundry options to keep up with our needs without much hand washing--which is much appreciated.
This was my first professionally organized and run birding tour and it exceeded my expectations. Rockjumper put together an amazing itinerary and was very efficient and thorough with the pre trip communication. Manuela Zapata did a fantastic job leading our group! She is a very knowledgeable and personable young lady and really knew the localities and birds! She was very attuned to the needs of the group and willingly birded extended hours as the group desired. I was very glad to have such a great local guide and not be led by an international “expert”.
This was my first birding trip ever – I filled in for a friend who was booked, but could not go due to a health concern a mere two months from the start of the trip. I was totally unprepared for the intensive focus on the birds however, Stephan and Paul and really the entire group were very gracious and accommodating, and really made an effort to include me and despite my naïveté I really did enjoy the entire experience and saw some pretty cool birds! I would highly recommend this trip to the experienced Birder; and to the beginner understand that it is all birds all the time. The main things you need are a good hat, plenty of sunblock, decent binoculars, hiking shoes are better than plain sneakers as the terrain can be rough and rocky, layers of jacket and shirts for cooler areas, and phone camera is OK but if you really want better pictures of the birds that are at a distance you might want to bring a larger camera. I purchased extra shampoo and shower gel at one of the gas station shops - some of the hotels did not supply all, and even soap was sometimes miniscule. In conclusion Stephan and Paul were not only the Bird Whisperers, making birds magically appear out of nowhere, making sure everyone could get a view, lugged those scopes all over for a “Birds Eye view for all”, expertly navigated every detail from travel to sites and hotels and food and rest stops. They are truly the entire package of a professional guide ! I also mention Ibrahim, our driver -I even told Stephan he should give him a part of his paycheck - he did such a great job of navigating the tiny roads and big highways and even spotted some of the birds as we were driving . He even stayed with those of us who were staying on at the Relax Airport hotel and made sure we all got properly checked in . All in all it was a fabulous experience .
The tour was wonderful! David’s endless knowledge and his expertise in spotting/finding birds and other animals is almost superhuman (lol)! Thanks for the great trip!
Not to repeat my comments regarding the main tour, but this extension was equally good. I have never been on a birding trip where we have found so many of the 'maybe if you're really lucky' possibilities, and to see a birder as experienced and with a world-list as long as Adam's getting multiple lifers on a trip like this was really something. Again, in the packing advice for this trip I think high-top hiking boots/Wellington boots should be very strongly recommended or even mandated. I actually lost one of my shoes in the mud on Cebu, though fortunately it was easy enough to recover.
Really this tour was just dreamy. Absolutely loved our fired up and enthusiastic leader, Paul Josep-always a smile on his face and a bird in his lens (and therefore in ours!). I'd also like to give a shout out to our drivers, particularly John in Kenya-just a superb birder himself and landed us some amazing sightings and got us through some hairy drives.
